Palm Tree by Philippa Werry SJ P4 N1 2009
Snail by John Malone SJ Sept 2011 L3

Complete the below table.
Analyse the poems to find out what language features are used. Find and show examples.
Decide on and justify what purpose or effect these features had on the poem.

Language Feature
Palm Tree
Snail
Purpose/Effect
Metaphor
Hand full of combs grooming the cloudsA kennelful of shaggy dogs
He is a hoboH is an athleteHe is a hanselHe is a bearHe is a tankHe is a King
The reason why this author wrote these metaphors is because he/she wanted to compare the palm tree/ snail to something they are not.
Personification
Hand full of combs grooming the cloudsThe leaves are like a hand full of combs grooming the clouds.
He is a hoboMeans that he has no home
The reason why this author wrote some personification  is because he/she wanted to give a human kind of effect.

  1. Compare and contrast: Explain the difference between a simile and a metaphor.

  1. Both of these poems are filled with metaphors, choose one metaphor from each poem and describe what you think it means for the subject of the poem.

Palm Tree
Snail
Metaphor Example
A kennelful of shaggy dogs
He is an athlete
Explain what you think it means
I think it means like the leafs are soft and are in a bunch
It means he faces challenges every day and runs marathons over the T.V

  1. CREATE and APPLY YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Using metaphors, create your own poem about either:
  • A person (Principal/Teacher)
  • or place (Library/SickBay/PE Shed)
  • or thing (Monkey Bars/Whiteboard/Tree/Pou) around the school.
Draft on this doc, then publish your poem in a suitable way and share to the blog
